Savannah Rivers Nuclear Solutions, also known as SRNS, presented 113 mini-grants to as many as 200 teachers, including those who teamed up to receive grants of $1,000, $750 and $500. SRNS donated $75,000 for the second straight year after company President Dwayne Wilson increased the contribution. The teachers were invited to Newberry Hall on Thursday for a formal ceremony. SRNS staffers realize that longterm trends are moving toward science, technology, engineering and math instruction, Wilson said. Yet, the arts are just as important in developing comprehension, he said. “Our future is right there in front of me,” Wilson said. “… Our challenge is to make sure they are getting the education they need. That’s why we are trying to support you. Four kindergarten teachers at Redcliffe Elementary School collaborated on What’s Sprouting in 5K. “We’re studying on life cycles and will share an egg hatchery to improve our science knowledge,” said Cheryl Henderson. At Millbrook Elementary School, Leah Lewis is introducing Hitting the Trail for her fourth-graders. “My students will get data off food labels to calculate percentages and different math statistics,” Lewis said. “The amount of money helps and also will be used for a documents camera the students can work with. Lewis’ colleague, Tomeka Williams, helps 47 children as a speech therapist and will use her $500 grant to assist her kids with science books. “Some of them have articulation issues with producing speech sounds,” Williams said. “Others have language issues in recalling information built into the vocabulary. The best thing is that they will be able to take the science books home at the end of the year. Almost 35 years after Helen Holladay vanished after a fight with her husband, authorities have pulled what they believe was the family’s pickup from Lake Granbury, uncovering a woman’s skeletal remains inside. “We pulled the vehicle out of the water and we started sifting through the sediment that had settled into the cab and we found the skeletal remains of a body,” Hood County Sheriff Roger Deeds said. “Upon digging all through the course of the afternoon into the night, we found a complete skeleton and some identifying information that was also in there that ties the skeleton and that truck to Helen Holladay. Although a cause of death was not immediately clear, Deeds said the case is being investigated as a homicide. Holladay was last seen alive Sept. 29, 1979, when neighbors reported she’d been in a bloody struggle with her husband, Herman Holladay, at their weekend residence at Whippoorwill Bay on Lake Granbury. Herman Holladay had claimed that his wife, then 45, drove off toward Granbury in the family‘s 1973 Chevrolet pickup. “Early on in the investigation, the husband was looked at as a suspect but he was never charged with a crime. We never got any evidence to tie him to it,” Deeds said. Helen Holladay was declared dead in 1986. Her husband later died. Through the years, authorities had searched Lake Granbury via air, with boat using special sonar equipment, and with divers, looking for Holladay and another man missing from the area, but with no success. At about 11:30 a.m. Thursday, a Granbury city employee reported seeing a vehicle partially sticking out of the lake a few feet off the shore and not far from Pearl Street and the former site of the Brazos motel. The Brazos River Authority and Granbury Police Department assisted the sheriff’s department with the recovery, Deeds said. Low lake levels, brought on by the drought, were credited with revealing the pickup’s resting spot. At normal lake levels, the area where the vehicle was found would have been in 15 to 16 feet of murky water and about 15 feet from the normal shoreline, Deeds said. “The top half of it is rotted,” Deeds said. “A lot of the side walls of the bed are pretty well gone but the cab and very back end with the tailgate, which was sticking out of the water. Deeds said authorities will use DNA samples provided by Holladay’s two daughters in 2008 to positively identify the remains. “We can’t say 100 percent this is her at this point,” Deeds said, but because of the make of the pickup, the female remains inside, and a purse and clothing found, “it does appear it’s going to be her. “We’ve never stopped the investigation. It’s gone cold a number of times,” Deeds said. “... We might never know what exactly happened to her but we’re going to be working on that, too. Deeds said the location where the pickup was found is not near a roadway, making it unlikely that the pickup ended up in the lake due to a wreck. “Somebody put a lot of effort into getting it in that way,” he said. “Whether she did it herself or something else happened, I don’t know. The investigation will continue. Deeds said the discovery has left sheriff’s investigators “somewhat very happy because we’re able to give the family some closure. “We don‘t have an exact cause of death yet but we’re working on it. The daughter that one of my investigators talked to was very happy, too,” Deeds said. “She’s gone for several years with the unknown of where her mom is. It looks like we finally found her mom. In 5 seconds, click here to continue reading... rGo to permalinkSIt's tempting to think of the universe as a meaningless repository for celestial objects like planets and stars. But an intriguing theory suggests there's much more to the cosmos than meets the eye — and that black holes play an integral role in what our universe is actually trying to achieve. It's called the theory of Cosmological Natural Selection and it was conjured by Lee Smolin, a researcher at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics and an adjunct professor of physics at the University of Waterloo. His theory suggests that the universe is — for all intents and purposes — a black hole generator, or a system that's optimized to produce as many baby universes as possible. In his book, The Life of the Cosmos, Smolin proposed that Darwinian processes still apply at the extreme macro-scale and to non-biological entities. Because the universe is a potentially replicative unit, he suggests that it's subject to selectional pressures. Consequently, nearly everything the universe does is geared toward replication. "It's a scenario that explains how the laws of nature are chosen," Smolin told io9, "and if true, these parameters are geared to maximize the number of black holes made in the universe. Indeed, black holes — and the cosmological singularities they produce — are central to Smolin's theory. These are regions of space-time where the quantities used to measure gravitational fields or temperature become infinite. It's also where general relativity stops being useful, making any kind of prediction impossible. Classical general relativity says that a singularity exists inside each black hole. But both string theory and loop quantum gravity suggest that black hole singularities can be eliminated — and when this happens, it may be possible to describe the future evolution of the space-time region within it. "Everything that falls into a black hole doesn't just hit the cosmological singularity and just stop evolving so that time simply comes to an end," he says. "Time continues and everything that falls into the black hole would have a future where the singularity was, and that region is what we call a baby universe. Moreover, Smolin says these baby universes are immune to whatever happens in the parent universe, including eternal inflation and its ultimate heat death. "Black holes are predicted to evaporate by making radiation — what's called the Hawking Process," he says, "but only until they get down to an equilibrium with the temperature of the cosmic microwave background." This process, says Smolin, has to do with the properties of the horizon — and it's only the horizon that evaporates. "The baby universe may come into a kind of contact with the original universe in a way it didn't before, but whether this happens or not depends on the details of the quantum gravity theory," he says. And like Darwin's theory of variation and selection, Smolin also surmises that baby universes are slightly different than the parent who spawned them. In turn, this cosmological "mutation" — in which the parameters of nature have been slightly modified — may result in a new universe that's either better or worse in terms of its replicative ability. For example, if the cosmological constant and speed of light were slightly tweaked, or if the law of gravity became too weak or strong, the new universe could be suboptimal in its ability to make massive quantities of massive stars. In such a universe, matter might not be able to coalesce into stars, or galaxies might be unable to form. In this model, a "fit" universe, therefore, is one that has evolved such that its ability to produce black holes has been optimized. And this may explain why we observe a universe that produces large swaths of giant stars — each one an attempt to make a baby. The idea of cosmological variation, however, is one of pure conjecture. "It's an hypothesis," Smolin concedes. But that said, Smolin points to string theory as a potential mechanism. "There could be a connection there," he told us, "it describes a landscape of different cosmological parameters — different phase transitions between them — and this is almost exactly the kind of example I had in mind when trying to explain the variation of the constants. Smolin is also unsure how many baby universes each black hole is able to produce — though he suspects that it's one per black hole. "The answer," he says, "will ultimately depend on quantum gravity theory. We asked Smolin if life in the universe is therefore an accident — that humans and all other organisms are mere epiphenomenon, a sideshow to a much larger process. "If the hypothesis of Cosmological Natural Selection is true, then life — and the universe being biofriendly — is a consequence of the universe being finely-tuned to produce black holes by producing many, many massive stars. But he added: "Those if statements are important. Other scientists have conversely argued that the universe is freakishly biophilic — that the laws of nature appear to be geared towards making life. Some even suggest that this is the ultimate purpose of the universe — that it's fine-tuned to spawn biological organisms (the so-called biocosm hypothesis). Similarly, philosophers like to talk about the Anthropic Principle — the notion that any analysis of the universe and what happens within it must must take into account the presence of observers (i.e. intelligent life). We're subject to an observational selection effect, they argue, which means we can only ever observe a universe that's friendly to life. Smolin, on the other hand, brushes these lines of argumentation aside, saying that cosmologists should study and understand the properties of the universe in a way that doesn't connect it to life. The Anthropic Principle, he says, is simply incapable of making a falsifiable prediction for any kind of testable experiment. At the same time, however, "Cosmological Natural Selection," he says, "is very capable of doing just that. Moreover, the laws of the universe — and all the stuff that's within it — can all be explained without referencing it to life. "It's not a coincidence," he says, "that we live in a world which has lots of carbon and oxygen in it, along with long list of suitable stars, and so on." The presence of these apparent life-friendly elements — like carbon and oxygen — has a perfectly good explanation outside of the biophilic paradigm. These elements, says Smolin, creates the conditions necessary for the efficient formation of sufficiently massive stars that form black holes. The claims made as evidence by Anthropic Principle supporters, he says, can be explained in an alternative way. Needless to say, Smolin's Big Idea has received its fair share of criticism. It's an extraordinary idea, after all, and extraordinary ideas often undergo extraordinary levels of scrutiny. Cosmologist Joe Silk, for example, says the universe we observe is far from being an optimal producer of black holes. He speculates that other "versions" of the universe could do a much better job. Similarly, Alexander Vilenkin argues that the rate of black hole formation can be improved by increasing the value of the cosmological constant. Smolin is wrong, he says, to hypothesize that the current values of all the constants of nature are perfectly adjusted to maximize black hole production. Ruediger Vaas complains that Smolin's first mistake was to start making analogies to Darwinian processes. The fitness of Smolin's universes, he says, aren't constrained by their environments, but by the numbers of black holes. Moreover, although Smolin's universes have different replication rates, they aren't competing against each other — what he feels is a crucial component of any Darwinian process. Smolin...believes that the constants of nature are determined by survival of the fittest: the fittest to reproduce that is. Those properties which lead to the largest rate of reproduction will dominate the population of universes and the overwhelming likelihood is that we live in such a universe. At least that's the argument. But this logic can lead to ridiculous conclusions. In the case of eternal inflation it would lead to the prediction that our universe has the maximum possible cosmological constant, since the reproduction rate is nothing but the inflation rate.When we asked Smolin about these objections, he said that many of these concerns were addressed in his book, The Life of the Cosmos, and that his upcoming book, Time Reborn: From the Crisis in Physics to the Future of the Universe, will also tackle many of these questions (the book also dispels the idea that time is a kind of illusion). And when possible, Smolin has addressed individual concerns (for example, the entire Smolin-Susskind debate can be read here; and his retort to Vilenkin can be seen here). Ultimately, however, the objections leave him unfazed. "My impression is the idea has not been refuted even though several people have tried," he told us. "It doesn't mean the idea is true, but the idea has stood up to attempts to falsify it. "Look, for me, the important part of the claim is that it is a scientific argument. The idea itself is not the most important thing — it's a very interesting idea, sure — but it instantiates a general claim that — if you want to explain the universe — one of the things you're going to have to explain is why we see certain laws of nature and not others. And the claim I'm making is that this question can in fact be answered scientifically — one that will lead toward a way for us to make predictions to see if the laws of nature are not fixed for all time, but evolved. That is the key point for me. As for the exact mechanism of cosmological evolution, he says that a certain model or scenario might be right, or it might be wrong. The important point, says Smolin, is that science can only be completed to the extent of our ability to explain why the laws of nature are they way they are if they evolved over time. "As far as the scenario of Cosmological Natural Selection is concerned," he says, "it's just an hypothesis just as much as it was for Darwin and Mendel — two scientists who figured out how natural selection worked before knowing anything about DNA or the molecular instantiation of genes. Many people sit at their desk jobs day in and day out, just dreaming of dropping everything and flying off to some far-flung corner of the world. They sit and stare out of the window or ignore the customers as they fling their groceries through the bar code scanner, dreaming of a hammock on a tropical beach or the adventure of a life on the road. Yet for the vast majority of people, that is where it will end. They will go back to their dreary little jobs, their own little bubble of existence and they will dismiss those dreams as just that. Dreams. They will dig themselves deeper and deeper into that comfort zone until one day they will find themselves so mired in it that it seems impossible to claw their way back out again. Ever heard of a bucket list? That little checklist of things that most people want to do before they kick the proverbial bucket? Well, travel is right up there on most people’s top 10 — top 3, even. I mean seriously, what’s the alternative here, people? Stay in your comfort zone because it’s easier? Stay at home, keep that boring job, and clock in and out every single day in that endless cycle of groundhog day banality? You will work for another 20, 30, 40 years or more, reach retirement age and then get forced to carry on working anyway! And just before you finally drop dead from sheer exhaustion, your last words on this earth will be “I wish I had. There is a wonderful quote by Mark Twain that I absolutely love and have always tried to live by. 20 years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. Don’t get me wrong: I know it takes guts to follow your dreams. Believe me, I’ve been there and done that. It takes guts to pull yourself out of your comfort zone and do something completely different. That’s totally natural. It’s normal to be afraid when faced with something daunting. That will never really go away. The big trick is to not let those feelings stop you from following your dreams. Because when you do, when you overcome them and take that first step you will feel like you have been given wings. The world is a vast, wonderful and amazing place, and it is yours for the taking. Anything is possible and you will have reminded yourself that you are not some mindless drone following the same path as everyone around you, you are capable of much, much more than that. So when you take that first step, how do you turn those dreams into a reality? Here’s the good part, it is surprisingly easy. 1. Start saving. You may have had the dream of backpacking or traveling the world for some time, but what have you done to make it a reality? Start saving NOW. Backpacking costs money, and you will need a big pot of it to go on an extended round the world trip or gap year (or more). It isn’t all that difficult to do, just budget well. Do you really need that expensive sandwich every day at lunch, or that cup of coffee from the fancy coffee shop every morning? Just remember that cash you just handed over for your big sandwich will have paid for a beach hut in Thailand. Make a monthly budget, stick to it, and give yourself a target to reach in six months’ time. It is surprising how much having a goal can galvanize you. 2. Get a rough plan. While you are saving, keep the inspiration alive by planning for your big trip. Get on the internet and read about the amazing travels and adventures other people are having, find people that really inspire you. Grab every and any brochure or travel literature on places you think you may want to see or things you may want to do. Join a few travel forums and talk to like-minded people. As you do this, you should start formulating a rough plan of where you want to go. Get a big map and pin it on your wall, then stick a load of pins in the places you must visit on your gap year or backpacking adventure. It doesn’t matter about the practicalities at this point, just get excited about the places that inspire you. 3. Narrow the plan down. Once you have all of that, your excitement levels should be brimming over. Your round the world adventure is looking more and more like a possibility isn’t it? Told you it would! You have a long list of places that inspire you, a rough plan, and by now you should have a fair sized pot of savings, too. Now is the time to start getting serious about that plan. Narrow down the rough route you have into something more practical. Ask yourself where you want to start and where you want to finish. A little bit more specific research is required here. Have a look at suggested route itineraries adventure travel companies have on their books and copy them. Go and speak to the experts, travel agents who specialize in backpacking or other backpackers on travel websites and forums who will be able to advise you on how to whittle your rough plan into something practical and reasonable. This is the point where your dreams start to coalesce into something more tangible. This is the point where your fantasies about traveling the world are about to become a reality. 4. Start sorting out the practicalities. By now, the light at the end of the tunnel is more than in sight, you can almost feel the soft sea air on your face already, smell the aromatic peanut and lemongrass on the air from Thai street vendors, taste that beer on that sun kissed beach in Mexico. In short — your dreams are becoming reality. So now is the time to sort out the necessary practicalities so you are ready for when your flying out date finally arrives. Get your budget sorted — you will have saved up most of what you need already and will hopefully continue to do so as you start your serious planning, but now is the time to find out how much your daily budget should be in the places you are wanting to visit and how long you want to stay in them for and see if your savings stack up. Research what vaccinations you will need and get them sorted now (the earlier the better), and see if you will need to apply for any visas beforehand. 5. Take the first step to the rest of your life. After you have done all this you should have a pretty good stash of money saved up and most of the planning and practicalities sorted. Now it’s time to go and buy your ticket. Believe it or not, this is often the hardest step for people because they see that plane ticket as the point of no return. Up until now it has all still been just a plan, a dream. Actually handing over the money makes it real. Once you have it, your course is locked in. But don’t worry, once you do buy your ticket, then all you have to do is look forward to your trip and sorting out any last minute details and planning, there is no turning back now. It really doesn’t matter if your planned departure date is six weeks or six months away, whatever time you have just means more time for saving, planning and enjoying the excitement and anticipation of going away. And that is it. That really is all it takes to drag yourself out of your comfort zone and turn your dreams into reality! It doesn’t seem like much, does it? Well, that’s because it isn’t. Once you have broken it down into little manageable chunks, you realize the impossible has suddenly become possible, your dreams have actually come within reach, and you can grab them with both hands if you want to. So go and enjoy your travels, say goodbye to the mundane 9 to 5 existence, and say hello to sipping mango juice on a sun kissed island. Get on that plane and experience backpacking the world first hand and realize that you can live your dreams. Follow News Submit Your News Agency: Child exploitation a problem in El Dorado County ArticleComments (0)SmallerLarger Related MediaEl Dorado County’s Health and Human Services Agency on Tuesday updates the board of supervisors on its efforts to stop the commercial sexual exploitation of children, a growing problem in the county.From 2010 to 2012, the HHSA was aware of three child exploitation cases in the county. Since 2013, it has become aware of 15 more cases, most of which are children in the foster care or probation systems.“We need to change the conversation,” said Mark S. Contois, assistant director of human services of HHSA. “This exploitation of children is one of the most horrific crimes possible and we need to treat these children as victims instead of criminals by providing the children with the intensive intervention and services needed to be successful.”To address the issue of human trafficking and sexual exploitation for foster and probation youth, HHSA has partnered with Placerville Police, El Dorado County Probation, El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office, El Dorado County Counsel and the El Dorado County Office of Education to form the Foster Youth and Human Trafficking Task Force.The task force’s goal, according to HHSA, is to quickly respond and address all needs of the child and pursue criminal prosecution against people who are exploiting children.“Human trafficking can only be stopped through the coordinated efforts of many organizations,” Contois said. “Our county task force brings the right people to the table to combat human trafficking locally through partnership, awareness, prevention and prosecution.”According to HHSA and the Federal Bureau of Investigations, three of the nation’s 13 largest child prostitution areas are in California, the San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego metropolitan areas. Sacramento is one of several California hubs for trafficking because of its central location between Stockton, the Bay Area and Reno.El Dorado County District 4 Supervisor Ron Briggs requested a presentation from the Foster Youth and Human Trafficking Task Force at the Tuesday, April 22 board of supervisors meeting. The presentation will focus on the task force, the scope of child sexual exploitation problems in El Dorado County and the need for education and prevention programs.
