O’Guin also homered in Saturday’s finale, his first of the season. CONNECTTWEETCOMMENTEMAILMOREVolunteer State Community College baseball coach Mike Crossland said his team has been trying to “build to the tournament” for the past few weeks. This weekend, the Pioneers took a significant step toward doing so by sweeping a three-game series with visiting Southwest Tennessee at the Tim Garrett Baseball Complex. VSCC (20-19 overall, 10-14 Tennessee Junior College Athletic Association) exploded for 16 hits in Friday’s eight-inning, 14-4 victory in the series opener. They did so despite facing nine different pitchers, as the Saluqis were more than ready with a quick hook if their hurlers got in trouble. “Coach (George) Sykes has been notorious for doing that,” Crossland said. “We’ve played them before, where they’ve used a different pitcher every inning. It takes focus, no question, and if they’re trying to slow down your offense, it doesn’t matter if they’re right- or left-handed. What matters is that you find the baseball and attack it. The Pioneers greeted Southwest starter Matt Mills by striking for four runs in two innings. Mills faced 10 VSCC hitters, while none of the next eight Saluqi tossers saw more than five batters in any stint on the mound. Mills faced two batters in the third inning before being relived by Zack Buzzard, who pitched to just two VSCC hitters before leaving the game in favor of Chad Collins. “We just had to stay focused with every new pitcher coming into the game,” said VSCC shortstop Hunter Gilbert, who went 4-for-5 in Friday’s game with three RBIs. “We just had a good approach all game long. Southwest got out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and held it until the second when Nick Holt’s double plated Dalton Davis to tie the game. Gilbert followed it by singling in Holt and giving the Pioneers a 2-1 lead. “I think it was to our guys’ advantage,” said Gilbert of Southwest’s rotation of pitchers. “A pitcher has to stay in the groove when he’s going through the game. Southwest briefly tied it in the third before VSCC put up three runs in the bottom half of that frame, doing so when Chevis Hoover was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Austin Matthews. Davis’ sacrifice fly scored Riley McCown and Charlie Pal came home on Gilbert’s single to right field for a 5-2 lead. “I saw the ball well,” Gilbert said. “I hope it keeps going through the rest of the season. Hopefully, we’ll keep the bats swinging well through a postseason run. A new Saluqi pitcher – Matt McKinstry – faced the Pioneers in the fourth and retired the side in order, but after failing to get the first two batters out in the fifth, was replaced by Jacob Johnson. Johnson got two outs in the fifth and Justin Skinner recorded the final out in that inning after allowing two inherited runners to score. Blake Witt, Janathan Williams and Corbin Carter combined to pitch the game’s final two innings. While the Pioneer bats stayed hot, Davis (2-0) kept the Saluqis relatively cool at the plate, holding them to two runs in six innings. Evan Allison pitched the final two innings in relief, giving up a two-run home run to Dimitri Villanueva in the eighth inning. “We had two walks all day long,” Crossland said of his pitchers. “Which for us, considering where we’ve been in the past, is unbelievable. But the Pioneers had added four runs in the fifth to secure a big lead, as Holt’s sacrifice fly to shallow right-center field allowed Pal to race home from third base. Gilbert then added his third RBI single to score Hoover before Donte Albert joined the party with his run-scoring double to left field. McCown’s single allowed Gilbert to score for a 9-2 lead. “We’re just trying to continually get better, and we feel like we’re doing that,” Crossland said. “We’ve made progress the last four weeks. All I care about is showing progress where we can get this thing on the right track and have a postseason run ready to roll, and I think we’re doing that. Beech High product Chris O’Guin had had a tough-luck day at the plate by the time he came up with the bases loaded in the eighth inning, having gone 0-for-4 with multiple hard-hit balls turning into outs. But his patience was rewarded as Carter fed him a fastball over the outer half of the plate, and the lefty slashed it down the third-base line for a bases-clearing double, scoring Gilbert, Holt and Davis to invoke the run-rule and end the contest minutes before a heavy downpour engulfed the playing surface. “I was barreling the ball pretty good (Friday),” O’Guin said. “I had been struggling against lefties all season, and to get up there and hit a double off a lefty felt pretty good. For the Buccaneer alum, being able to play college ball in his backyard has been a big boost for him. “I love it,” O’Guin said. “Being right here in my hometown, there’s new faces, but we’re all brothers and I get to keep growing up in my hometown. It hasn’t really changed. O’Guin – who started the game at first base – said competing past high school has turned out to be a major undertaking. “This game’s a lot faster, and a lot more goes into it,” O’Guin said. “It’s a job. We have three or four-hour practices every day, but it pays off in the end. >>The Pioneer bats showed up early in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, as Vol State scored all five runs in the first three innings of a 5-2 victory. Pal’s two-run homer – his third of the year – got VSCC off and running in the first inning. He drove in McCown with his blast, and McCown picked up two RBIs in the second inning by doubling in Matthews and Albert for a 4-0 lead. Gilbert’s run-scoring single plated Holt in the third to cap the Pioneer scoring. It was enough for Hoover to cruise to a complete-game victory, as he pitched all seven innings, striking out seven Saluqis and allowing five hits for his sixth win of the season. Justin Kemp took the complete-game loss for Southwest, allowing six hits and walking three despite striking out seven Pioneers. The Pioneers were guilty of three errors in the second game of the series, while Southwest was charged with two errors of their own. McCown and Pal each went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Holt had a triple and Gilbert had the Pioneers’ other hit in the contest. >>The Pioneers picked up where they left off in the series finale, scoring all of their runs in the first four innings in a 9-3 victory. O’Guin hit his first home run of the season in the finale, a two-run shot in the fourth to score Gilbert – who tripled in Holt one batter earlier. O’Guin drove in Davis on a ground ball in the first inning and finished with three RBIs in the contest. Hoover had an RBI single and Davis followed with a 2-run double as the Pioneers scored four runs in the opening frame off of McKinstry, who failed to record an out against five batters after starting the contest. Davis added to the lead in the second, as his double scored Pal for a 5-0 lead. Albert’s double in the third scored O’Guin to give VSCC a 6-0 lead. That lead was plenty for the Pioneer pitchers, led by starter Randy Lopez, who improved to 4-5 after pitching five innings and allowing one run on two hits, while striking out five hitters. Evan Jones, Kida De La Cruz and Austyn Dyer combined to pitch the final two innings in relief. After a trip to Mt. Carmel, Ill., to face Wabash Valley on Tuesday, the Pioneers play their final conference series of the regular season at Jackson State on Thursday and Friday. Over the next couple of months, Seattle will welcome a dizzying number of new restaurants and bars from seasoned chefs and newcomers launching their first buzzy projects. Here's an alphabetical list of 15 of the city's most eagerly awaited openings set to launch between now and the first day of summer. 15 restaurants to look forward to over the next two months. What: The owners of Blind Pig Bistro are transforming the former Blind Pig at Eastlake Teriyaki space next door into Babirusa (that's also a pig-bear from Indonesia,) an unfussy restaurant and cocktail spot. What: The people behind Local 360 are launching the meaty, European-inspired Bell + Whete in the neighborhood at 206 Bell Apartments. Also, broad beer, cider, and whiskey lists. What: One of Eater's "44 Most Anticipated Openings of Spring 2014," Brunswick & Hunt's "farm-to-neighborhood" concept from brothers Barry Rogel (DeLuxe Bar & Grill) and Scott Rogel (The Athenian) is weeks away from opening its doors on 70th St. near Delancey and Fat Hen. Chef Jeffrey Davidson (Bastille, Ray's, Vios) is building a menu around local ingredients and nose-to-tail cooking. What: After shuttering more than a year ago, James Snyder (Sam's Tavern) and Neumos partner Mike Meckling swooped in and are revamping the venerable Canterbury (CHS has the backstory). Snyder tells Eater he's looking at a mid-May opening, which means we're weeks away from a first look into the 15th Ave. watering hole with an almost 40 year history. What: Ethan Stowell's domination of Ballard Ave. will continue when he opens Chippy's Fish and Drink in the former Dutch Bike Co. coffee shop space next to his Staple & Fancy Mercantile. Expect "old-school seaside specialties" including Shrimp Louie. Plus, a full bar with eight rotating beers on tap. What: Bryn Lumsden (fun fact: he's a founding member of Fleet Foxes) has put in time at Rob Roy, Vito's, and Vessel. Now he's launching cocktail, dinner, and snack spot Damn the Weather in the burgeoning Pioneer Square. Even better: The bar menu is rumored to include homemade candy corn. What: Familiar names, including Mr. Murray Stenson, have been brought on staff at Elysian Bar, the new downtown cocktail spot and restaurant from the owners of the Seattle-based brewery. Instead of the low-key, casual vibe of its Tangletown, Pioneer Square, and Capitol Hill pubs, the new Elysian in the former Noc Noc space will be decidedly dressed up, with crudo, steaks, and chops on the menu. What: Worth every calorie, fried chicken, waffles, and coconut lime jalapeño wings are on the menu at Fat's, the new spot from the owners of Li'l Woody's and Happy Grillmore (a.k.a. the best named food truck on earth.) Lunch, featuring 10" personal size pies and (cross your fingers) meatball sandwiches. Says Coury: "We've been wanting to open in Georgetown for a while...The neighborhood is very Squirrel, and there isn't a ton down there for all-ages. What: Andrew Friedman's (Liberty) wants Good Citizen, his upcoming bar in the former Online Coffee location, to be "laid back, like a get together at someone's house." Communal tables, batch cocktails, and staff from food trucks manning the kitchen for two-month stints are planned for the Olive Way watering hole. He says, "It's a beloved space, I'm lucky to have it. What: It's almost time for Hitchcock and Altstadt chef Brendan McGill to start serving his killer BLTs, pastrami on rye, and club sandwiches at Hitchcock Deli Georgetown. The sibling to his Bainbridge Island deli sits right next to Via Tribunali in Georgetown; McGill also plans cure meats in the back of the house. What: Jeremy Hardy (Coastal Kitchen, Mioposto Mt. Baker) is transforming the former Taverna Mazi space near University Village into a second Mioposto featuring wood-fired pizza. The new location will seat 60 and include a grab-and-go counter and breakfast pizza with mozzarella, pancetta, egg, breadcrumbs, and hot sauce. What: Il Corvo's Mike Easton searched for more than half a year before finding the perfect Pioneer Square location for his Pizzeria Gabbiano. The 1,000-square-foot restaurant will serve lunch, then possibly expand hours. Easton says: "Essentially, we're doing pizza that's really based off of the pizza you find in Campo de' Fiori in Rome." If the pie shop is half as popular as Il Corvo, people will be beating Easton's door down the day he opens. What: Eric and Zarina Sakai are planning a quick transition for the future home of their Restaurant Marron in the Olivar location on Roy St. Philippe Thomelin plans to shutter Olivar at the end of April, and by June the space will be reopen as a fine dining spot serving a $58 four-course tasting menu or a $189 "carte blanche" menu that includes up to 18 small plates. What: Adding to its Capitol Hill location at Melrose Market, Taylor Shellfish plans to start serving bivalves, beer, and wine next week at the Expo building in Lower Queen Anne. The oyster bar will also open a Pioneer Square outpost in the coming months. If it's April, then Record Store Day must be almost upon us and if you like vinyl, you'll have an opinion on this now-regular aspect of the industry calendar. You'll be able to get your fill of RSD articles (most of which will be the same as last year's) elsewhere this weekend, but until then, let's see how we've been getting our Vinyl Fix recently at TMF Towers. Score! Digging For Records in ... Me and Europa Records go back a long way. More than 20 years anyway - it's best not to ponder too long on these things. Visits are irregular now, but it's always heartening to turn onto Friars Street and see it still there, having survived the worst ravages of the record shop downturn. A university town (and now officially a city), Stirling used to support a now long-gone branch of Fopp, but still supports an HMV alongside Europa, meaning residents and visitors are pretty well served musically. I seem to recall Europa only doing second-hand stuff back in the day, but the front shop now carries a solid selection of new and used CDs and vinyl, with a smattering of DVDs, music books and other memorabilia. Pricing is fair and there's enough stock to keep most punters happy for an hour or so, but Europa's biggest claim to fame is what can only be described as the shed of vinyl out the back, which claims to be the biggest selection in the central belt. It's maybe a Scottish peculiarity, but as we noted last time, overstocking is a real issue north of the border. The piles - and piles - of unsorted vinyl, 7"s, 12" and albums actually works against making a sale. Even hardened rummagers will weary of flicking through all the crap in the hope of happening over something interesting. The downsides are obvious: uncared-for stock just becomes ever more tatty, and the chances of it eventually selling seem ever more remote. So it seems rather hypocritical to be recommending a shonky re-press of the infamous Los Exitos dos Sex Pistols by Los Punk Rockers, the mysterious Spanish album from 1978 which covers the entirety of Never Mind The Bollocks in its own peculiar style. No-one really knows much about this history of the record. A few sources repeat the story that the label wanted to licence Bollocks for the Spanish market; not wanting to pay the necessary fees, they instead roped a bunch of local musicians into re-recording the whole thing note for note. This theory overlooks the fact that Virgin had already issued the album in Spain in 1977, negating the need for a local issue, so it seems more likely to have been made for the cheap 'covers' market - like all the Top of the Pops albums we had in the UK. Whatever the reality, we've been left with an eminently strange record that has its own sense of snotty character. It's rough and ready (sonically it's more first album Clash than the multi-track original) yet competent musically. What sets it apart are the vocals, a manic, almost hysterical performance by someone who only has a vague grasp of phonetic English. Wouldn't the world be a different place if the lyrics really were "We're so pretty, oh so pretty, we will cart her!"? Not the kitsch classic it's sometimes described as, consider it more a missive from an alternate punk planet - and an essential listen for anyone interested in the period. Punk rock of a more authentic variety arrives in the second part of an ongoing Bikini Kill re-issue series. With the catalogue now back in the hands of the band, 1993's Yeah Yeah Yeah is re-jigged on account of the unavailability of the Huggy Bear tracks that originally made up the flip side. YYY was BK at their most fundamental; recorded on a 4-track, it was the likes of 'Don't Need You' and the thrilling 'Jigsaw Youth' that confirmed their capacity for sheer punk energy, while 'Rebel Girl' (which they would re-record two more times) became not just a band anthem, but a rallying cry for an entire movement. This new edition comes with seven previously unreleased tracks drawn from practice sessions and live shows. When Nirvana issued Incesticide to combat bootlegs of rare material, you got a sense of an edgier, more experimental act that became suffocated under the gaze of mainstream attention. These 'new' tracks do a similar job for Bikini Kill, highlighting the band's roots in spoken word performance and pre-grunge noise. There may not be another 'Rebel Girl' hidden in here, but in the likes of 'I Busted In Your Chevy Window' you get more than a sense of the righteous fury that would drive Riot Grrrl over the next few years. The Police Service of Northern Ireland is investigating after a prominent dissident republican was shot dead in West Belfast Dissident republican suspects in the killing of one of their former commanders in Belfast are "dinosaurs trapped in the past", the city's Lord Mayor said. Ex-Continuity IRA (CIRA) figure Tommy Crossan, 43, was shot dead at a fuel depot in the grounds of an industrial complex in full view of surrounding houses. Three gunmen may have carried out the killing and a red BMW car was found on fire nearby. A priest attended to pray over the bloodied victim in West Belfast, an area long known as a republican heartland but which has been relatively peaceful in recent years following the end of the IRA campaign in 1998. Relatives gathered in tears at the scene, their devastation visible to onlookers. First citizen Mairtin O Muilleoir of Sinn Fein said the killers existed in the dark margins of society but could not slow the pace of change in Belfast. He claimed: "They are dinosaurs trapped in the past and I urge everyone to work with the police to remove them from our streets. Crossan was once the CIRA's Belfast leader but was believed to be the subject of a death threat and had been expelled from the group some years ago after a fall out. He served time in prison for conspiracy to murder Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) officers following a gun attack on a police station in West Belfast in 1998. The CIRA has opposed the peace process which largely ended three decades of violence and transformed Northern Ireland. Crossan was killed on the 16th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement which mandated political power-sharing at Stormont. CIRA gunmen murdered Police Constable Stephen Carroll in Lurgan in Co Armagh in March 2009 but the organisation has since been riven with splits, security sources have suggested. Friday afternoon's attack happened at the Peter Pan Centre in Springfield Road, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said. Detectives have launched a murder investigation and are combing the scene for forensics clues. Mr O'Muilleoir told BBC Radio 4's The World Tonight: "There are some micro groups of criminals masquerading under an assortment of republican labels. They have no support within the community. "I wouldn't under any guise brand them 'professional' but they certainly are killers... They have nothing to offer to the people of Belfast. He said t here was a whole assortment of factions, and fractions of factions, of dissident republicanism and added every week produced another schism. "Sadly they clearly have access to guns and they have murderous intent and they are willing to kill those with whom they disagree. The largely-nationalist area of Belfast where the shooting happened is mainly comprised of tightly-packed terraced housing estates and businesses. Nationalist SDLP councillor Colin Keenan said it was a horrific scene. "We have long hoped that the shadow of death had been lifted from West Belfast. "Today's event is a terrible, tragic reminder of the violent conflict of the past. The Springfield Road, one of the main arterial routes, was closed to traffic. A PSNI spokeswoman said: "Detectives from Serious Crime Branch have launched a murder investigation after a man was shot dead in the Springfield Road area of West Belfast. Members of the security forces have been on high alert for attacks by various extremist factions who have also killed two soldiers and a prison officer. In recent weeks they have stepped up efforts to kill police officers, with several attacks on the force in West Belfast. After the murder of prison officer David Black on the M1 motorway in November 2012, police mounted an unprecedented surveillance operation against various factions as well making significant arrests. Sinn Fein Stormont Assembly Member Jennifer McCann said t hose behind Crossan's killing had no consideration for anyone in the community except themselves and their own criminal agenda. She added: "They have shot a man dead and endangered anyone in the immediate vicinity. "There is now a family in mourning and a community traumatised by this shooting. "It will not go unnoticed that, with sadness, at Easter time as republicans gather to commemorate their patriot dead, that there are criminals on the streets masquerading as republicans for their own ends. "This community does not want them. They need to listen to this community, stop these senseless actions and go away. Despite an overall cordial interaction, Ham is now accusing Nye of making “disparaging comments” in the aftermath. Ham, the founder of Answers in Genesis, a Christian organization that rejects Darwinian evolution, took particular issue with an article Nye recently wrote for the Skeptical Inquirer. In it, Nye described the debate from his perspective, essentially claimed victory and called Ham “the head of a congregation,” a descriptive the creationist leader didn’t appreciate. Ham’s rebuttal continued, poking at claims Nye made about their public volleying over creationism and evolution. “In his 30-minute debate presentation, Nye repeatedly used phrases like ‘Ken Ham’s creation model,’ ‘Ken Ham’s flood,’ and ‘Ken Ham and his followers,’” Ham continued. “I don’t know his motive in saying such things except it seems he is continuing to suggest that I am the leader of some sort of minority group, with people who just follow me and I dictate what they believe. Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley announced April 11 that he signed the Fiscal Year 2015 Education Trust Fund Budget, which does not include a pay raise for teachers and support personnel. “We would love to have had more for our teachers, but we’ll do the best we can with what we get,” Chilton County Schools Superintendent Dave Hayden said. The education budget was passed April 3, minutes before the Legislature adjourned, preventing Bentley’s ability to attach any executive amendments to the bill, according to a press release from the governor’s office. Bentley announced in March his intention to attach an executive amendment to the budget, which would provide a 2-percent pay raise for teachers and support personnel. “I am disappointed that the Legislature decided not to provide a pay raise for our hard-working teachers and support personnel,” Bentley said in the release. “It is clear to me that the Legislature has no intention of passing a pay raise for teachers and support personnel at this time. “Therefore, I will not call a special session right now. However, I will keep a close watch on incoming revenues over the next few months, and will consider asking the Legislature to support a mid-year pay raise for teachers and support personnel if the revenues are there to support it. State Sen. Cam Ward said he was disappointed as well that the teacher pay raise was not included in the budget. “I voted against the education budget because I was the sponsor of the teacher pay raise, so I felt like I was on the same page as the governor,” Ward said. “I really felt we really needed that 2-percent pay raise. The 2-percent pay raise for teachers and support personnel would have cost about $60 million, Ward said. “I’m still an advocate for the 2-percent pay raise,” Ward said. “I’m disappointed in that, but I think the rest of the budget was a very fair budget. Going forward, retirement and health insurance increases are going to be the biggest challenges. Ward said the $5.9 billion education budget for FY 2015 sends funding directly into classrooms and local school districts. The budget includes an increase in money allotted to middle schools to decrease class sizes and allow for hiring new middle school teachers, as well as an additional $2.7 million for textbooks. “Also, a big issue that has been addressed is the amount of money that local school boards have to spend on transportation,” Ward said, adding that transportation funding increased by $3.8 million. Additionally, $600,000 more will be dedicated to classroom supplies, and the new budget added $70 million more than last year’s budget to ensure teachers do not have to pay more for health insurance through Public Education Employees’ Health Insurance Plan (PEEHIP). Bentley said he appreciates the Legislature’s support to fully fund PEEHIP, so that no teacher or support personnel will have to pay out-of-pocket for their health insurance benefits. “I appreciate their hard work and cooperation with me in that effort,” Bentley said. “The FY2015 Education Trust Fund Budget is a good budget and supports many important programs and initiatives that prepare students for success, many of which I called for in my State of the State address. State Rep. Kurt Wallace described the budget as “fiscally sound. Wallace said over the last eight years, teachers have received raises totaling 20 percent. “I think we’re getting a very responsible budget,” Wallace said. “We only have so much money. We met the needs of teachers as best we could. Hopefully next year if our economy improves, we’ll do more. Wallace and Ward said Other Current Expense (OCE) funds also increased by $3 million. OCE funds are discretionary funds given to local school systems, which determine the best use of the funds for their individual student populations. “You’ve got to be able to move some money around to meet the needs of your particular school,” Wallace said. •PEEHIP funding set at $780 per member per month that will not include any out-of-pocket costs for health insurance premiums for teachers or support personnel. •$10 million increase for Pre-K funding for 100 additional classrooms and 1,800 additional students to participate in the program. •Increase of $6 million in Dual Enrollment expansion. •Appropriates $7.7 million in Career Tech. •Appropriates $1.2 million for Career Coaches. •Protects funding for important programs like ARI, AMSTI and Distance Learning. “We’re excited about getting that trophy back to the school," Verbena Principal Kelvin Boulware said. Ray, who started the Free Alabama Movement, accused the state's prison system of "incarcerating people for the free labor. “There is not even the pretense of doing anything about corrections," said Ray. “They’re running a slave empire. The Free Alabama Movement has posted recorded cell phone interviews of inmates online, in which the men detail the unsanitary conditions of Alabama jails (video below). Ray claimed that prison officials have threatened the prisoners with solitary confinement if they go on strike. “It’s a hellhole,” Ray told Salon.com. “That’s what they created these things for, to destroy men. “We have to get [inmates] to understand: You’re not giving up anything. You don’t have anything. And you’re going to gain your freedom right here,” added Ray. Prisoners at Holman, Elmore and St. Clair state jails went on a work strike back in January. Alabama State Department of Corrections spokesman Brian Corbett told the Associated Press that only a small number of inmates refused to do work during the January strike. However, Ray claims that almost all of the prisoners at St. Clair and Holman prisons went on strike. “There may be some prisons we spent a lot of time organizing that don’t even go on strike [this time],” Ray told Salon.com. How should the Trail Blazers defend Dwight Howard? Who are the X-Factors? What team wins the series and in how many games? Six local reporters who eat, sleep, and breathe Trail Blazers basketball give their take in this week's edition of Running The Break. 1. To put it simply, Dwight Howard has been a monster this year when facing the Trail Blazers. In four games against Portland, the eight-time All-Star is averaging 25.5 points, on 63.3-percent shooting, 13.5 rebounds, 1.8 blocks, and 1 steal. Casey Holdahl (@Chold), TrailBlazers.com: I think you at least start by having Robin Lopez defend Dwight Howard one-on-one and see how it goes. Lopez is able to slow Howard down even in the slightest, I think you stick with it. The Rockets have too many threats on the perimeter to get away with throwing double teams at Howard regularly, though I'm sure you'll see the Trail Blazers send a second defender situationally. I just think you're better off staying home on James Harden, Chandler Parsons and Terrence Jones than you are trying to force Howard into turnovers and bad shots with double teams. Chris Haynes (@ChrisBHaynes), CSNNW.com: The way, in which players are stroking the outside shot nowadays, you’d rather give up a contested inside shot than a wide-open three-point shot, especially when talking about the shooters Houston has at its exposal. The same goes for Portland and the way LaMarcus Aldridge will probably be played. Unless Howard is dominating the offensive end and Portland finds itself trying to climb a huge deficit, that’s when it’s probably time to send a double. I expect the Trail Blazers to mix it up when bringing help, keeping Howard guessing. But I would think the plan is to play him straight up, for the most part. Erik Gundersen (@BlazerBanter), The Columbian: The best option defensively would be that the Blazers just let Lopez take his lumps against Dwight and not to double-team. Dwight's post-ups and his play against Portland will likely be a concern but Portland would be best served playing straight up and not letting three-point shooters or cutters off the ball beat them. For my money, the Blazers are better off with the ball in Dwight's hands than in the hands of James Harden. Mike Acker (@mikeacker), Willamette Week: The question of how to defend Dwight Howard is basically the key to the series. It makes sense to send double teams at him to keep him from getting easy baskets, but Houston has a ton of great shooters and they will make the Blazers pay if they are left open. So defending Dwight one-on-one might be the way to go, but the Blazers need Robin Lopez on the court. Robin’s going to pick up a lot of fouls going one-on-one with Dwight. Lopez is too valuable for that. If it were my game to plan, I would say make Dwight beat you from the free throw line. The problem with the Hack-a-Dwight strategy is that coaches don’t commit to it long enough. If Dwight makes a free throw or too, you shouldn’t stop fouling him, you should keep fouling him, math says that if he makes four in a row then at some point later in the game he is going to miss four in a row. Making Dwight consistently make free throws is the way to beat Houston. Dave Deckard (@blazersedge), BlazersEdge: I don’t think you can pick one or the other. Playoff series involve multiple adjustments. As soon as something works the other team counters it. You can’t get caught playing yesterday’s strategy. You have to anticipate how the opponent will adjust, keeping a step ahead of him. The Blazers will likely start out single-covering Howard but they may have to adapt in-game depending on how Houston’s shooters fare. I’ll be surprised if their Game 3 strategy looks the same as in Game 1. SlyPokerDog (@SlyPokerDog), RipCityTwo.com: You have to do a little of both. Mix it up a little to throw him off of his game as best as you can. Also if Lopez gets into foul trouble you’re going to have to do it because Freeland while a good defender is not going to be able to handle Howard. 2. Nicolas Batum said his matchup against Chandler Parsons can be the key to the series. Holdahl: It is if all the other position battles play out like everyone thinks they will. If you have Lillard over Beverley, Harden over Matthews, Aldridge over Jones and Howard over Lopez, it's natural to think that the one agreed upon "push" in this series is Batum vs. Parsons. In four games this season, Parsons has been the better player, but that will need to change if the Blazers are to have a chance in this series. I think the Rockets can beat the Blazers even if Batum beats Chandler in the head-to-head (inasmuch as head-to-head matchups exist in basketball), but I don't think Portland can beat Houston if Parsons outplays Batum. Haynes: It’s an important matchup. An intriguing one. The ultimate? Not sure about that. There are matchups galore in this series. If Nicolas Batum can outplay Chandler Parsons, no doubt about it, it gives the Trail Blazers a leg up. How Damian Lillard reacts to a rowdy playoff atmosphere and a pesky defender will be key, as the team surely needs him to play well to be successful. It’s going to be fun to see which matchup is truly key. Gundersen: No. As much as it's a good thing that Batum knows his match-up is important, it won't be the deciding factor. Which team commits to playing defense and which one can defend the three-point line with consistency is what I think will ultimately decide this series. The Blazers have struggled with transition defense all year although they have improved as the season has progressed. The Rockets allow the sixth-most three-point attempts per game in the league and Portland's ball movement can exploit the lackluster rotations from Houston's wings, James Harden and Chandler Parsons in particular. Beverley will get out to shooters at the point of attack, whether it be Mo Williams or Lillard but the second, third and fourth pass is where Portland can get good looks. They just have to make them. The Blazers also must limit the trips to the foul line for Harden, which is much easier said than done. Acker: I think more than anything it’s going to come down to a battle of the benches. The team with the most consistent reserves will win the series because a consistent reserve unit means solid rest for the starters. Both Houston and Portland are going to ride their starting five. Over the course of what could be a long and physical series heavy minutes for the starters could be a real issue. So the bench is my x-factor. As for the Nicolas Batum/Chandler Parsons match-up, in my opinion it goes two ways. If the Blazers make Chandler Parsons beat them, that means Dwight Howard and James Harden are not beating them. That’s a good thing. That doesn’t mean Nicolas Batum doesn’t need to focus on stopping Chandler Parsons, but Chandler Parsons isn’t going to beat the Blazers by himself. The other thing with Batum is that he needs to show up on offense, and here is where the match-up gets interesting. If Batum takes it on himself to outscore Chandler Parsons every night, the Blazers’ offense will be that much better. Deckard: If you qualify “X-Factor” as “thing that’s not so important but could develop”, then yes. But if you start ranking factors in terms of absolute importance, Batum on Parsons sits way down the list. Houston will run the ball through Harden, Howard, and Beverley/Lin before they start asking Parsons to go one-on-one versus Nic. How the Blazers and Batum run their help/rotation defense will be far more important than any mano-a-mano contest between the small forwards. To the extent that Parsons becomes significant (and he could!) it’ll be playing off of his teammates. His success, or lack thereof, probably won’t have much to do with Batum’s individual defense. SlyPokerDog: Batum will be a big part of it. The Blazers will need a motivated and engaged Batum to win but the X-Factor of the series will be Lillard. If he can handle the pressure of Beverley while still scoring the Blazers will be in good shape. 3. In Portland’s lone victory over Houston this season LaMarcus Aldridge went off for 31 points (12-22 FG) and 25 rebounds in 41 minutes of action. Holdahl: I don't think Aldridge has to put up 30+ points and 20+ rebounds a night for the Trail Blazers to win four games, but it certainly wouldn't hurt. What Aldridge needs to do is play well enough at the start of the series to make the Rockets at least consider double teaming him in the post. The Rockets don't mind giving up midrange shots and Aldridge doesn't mind taking them, so if he's as dialed in to start the playoffs as he was to start the regular season, Portland stands a great chance of an upset. Haynes: He has to play near that level. Averaging around 31 and 25 in a series is tough to do. But I can see LaMarcus Aldridge getting big numbers if Houston elects not to send doubles. They may leave Terrence Jones and others on an island, hoping Aldridge settles for a healthy dose of turnaround jumpers that clank more times than go in. Being an efficient scorer is what’s going to make the difference. If Aldridge is getting those numbers with a high field goal percentage, then yes, he can potentially will his team to the next series. Gundersen: Yes. Dwight Howard and James Harden are going to be on that level. Aldridge has been great against Houston this season and they'll need him to play at his best. Frankly, they are going to need Damian Lillard to do the same if they are really going to have a chance because Harden and Howard know what time it is. Acker: Basically yes. But it’s not just LA who needs to play at a high level for Portland to succeed. Every Blazer needs to have a great series for Portland to win. That being said, the same is true for the Rockets. Portland lost to Houston at home in a game where Meyers Leonard had to guard Dwight Howard for extended stretches, and lost to Houston on the road in an overtime game that got to overtime after James Harden willed in a three-pointer at the end of regulation. The Rockets are not that much better than the Blazers. If Houston thinks they are going to run away with this series, they’re wrong. Everybody on both teams needs to play great, so it’s going to be a great series. Deckard: There’s no way he can play at that level for 4-7 games, so the Blazers better hope not! But Aldridge is Portland’s key advantage. He’s averaged 27 points and 16 rebounds against the Rockets this year, well above his overall marks. Damian Lillard, by contrast, is averaging 19 points and 5 assists, slightly below his usual pace. Lillard also shoots 39% against Houston, well below normal. Throw in Lillard’s defensive struggles and you realize that if Aldridge doesn’t spearhead Portland’s attack they’ll have a hard time gaining a firm beachhead. The Blazers will depend on contributions from different players each night, but LaMarcus provides the foundation that makes those contributions count. SlyPokerDog: Yes. Our all-star needs to play at an all-star level for this team to advance to the second round. This series is on him. He asked Olshey for a center, he publicly stated he wanted to get back to the playoffs. We’re here. Now it’s up to him. 4. Holdahl: I don't know that either would be unexpected, but I'll go with Thomas Robinson for the Trail Blazers and Omer Asik for the Rockets. Asik only played in two games against the Trail Blazers this season and was mostly a non-factor, but now that he's healthy and willing to accept a role off the bench, he presents a lot of problems for Portland's second unit, which lacks size compared to Houston. As for Robinson, he's distilled his game down to what he does best and has mostly cut out the rest. He's played arguably the best basketball of his still young NBA career in the last two months and is hitting jumpers in or near the paint with some consistency. Energy off the bench is one of Robinson's greatest strengths, and playing against the team that most recently traded him is sure to add a little fuel to T-Rob's fire. Haynes: Aside from Mo Williams, Portland’s best player on the bench, I’d have to go with Dorell Wright. He’s been here before and is not afraid of the moment. I think he has a couple a big games in store with his ability to guard bigger players and spread the court. Omer Asik doesn’t get the playing time he’d get on most teams, but he’s a force. When Dwight Howard goes out, which means Robin Lopez will probably exit with him; no other Portland reserve can reasonably match up with Asik. He’ll have a clear advantage over the likes of Joel Freeland and Meyers Leonard. Those are two reserves to keep an eye on. Gundersen: Jeremy Lin and Mo Williams but I don't know how unexpected that really is. Acker: I want to say Will Barton for the Blazers since he’s got a real “rise to the occasion” mentality, but I doubt he’ll actually get that much run. Because of that, I’m going to say Dorell Wright. After dropping all the way out of the rotation for awhile, Wright has really come on in the second half, and surprisingly it’s been by doing things like rebounding and getting assists. This series might come down to which team hits more threes, and Dorell is the kind of player who can come off the bench ice cold and hit five threes it two minutes. Something like that might happen. For the Rockets… Terrance Jones is a starter, but he could be an impact player nobody is expecting much from. How about Omer Asik? If he plays, he’ll be a tough cover for Thomas Robinson and/or Joel Freeland. Probably an unexpected impact of a player like Asik is that he’ll absorb at least a couple fouls from Robinson and/or Freeland, fouls the Blazers are going to desperately need to use on Dwight Howard, fouls that Robin Lopez can afford to give up to Dwight Howard. Deckard: For the Blazers you have to look at Thomas Robinson and maybe Dorell Wright. They may need to play small-ball against Howard and Omer Asik. Those two have the potential to make the Houston bigs run around. For the Rockets you have to look at Jeremy Lin going up against Portland’s point guards, plus his potential to hit outside shots off of the play of the stars. SlyPokerDog: Mo Williams for the Blazers, his deep playoff experience will be invaluable for the team and could end up being the series 2nd MVP behind LaMarcus.
